Hire Cars

Many travellers get around the island by hiring a car with a driver. It is the fastest and most comfortable way to travel. Hire cars are mostly modern Japanese vehicles that are air conditioned with adequate luggage space.

Most tour agencies provide drivers who can also function as tour guides. Taking one of these tours with hire car and driver is a fantastic way to see the country; Reputable travel companies can tailor-make your trip along the usual tourist trails or provide alternatives to the usual well-trodden routes.

Sri Lankan tour guides typically speak English quite well and some are able to speak other languages such as German, Russian, Japanese or even Korean. TRAVELlers need to inform their tour operator in advance if they need a driver or guide who is able to converse in other languages.

Self Drive Cars

Self drive cars are available through global and local rental companies. However travellers will need to arrive in Sri Lanka with an International Driving Permit that has Sri Lanka listed on it in addition to a valid license from their home country.

The main roads in Sri Lanka are the best in South Asia. There are also excellent expressways connecting the airport, Colombo and the resorts on the south west coast.

However, the driving conditions are hectic and can be extremely stressful. The standard of driving on the island can only be described as mostly reckless and frequently dangerous. So most travellers hire a car with an experienced local driver and get around in style

Taxis, Cabs & Auto Rickshaws, (Three Wheelers or Tuk-Tuks)

There are several taxi services operating across the island, including Uber and local competitors with their own apps. Almost all Taxi firms in Colombo and most other cities will operate to and from the airport. Whether it is to the airport or any other destination, it would be advisable to negotiate a fare in advance to avoid being taken for a ride by unscrupulous cab drivers.

Auto Rickshaws or Tuk-Tuks are ideal for short journeys within towns and cities or for short trips. Once again it is better to always agree on a fare beforehand.

Drinking and driving is a problem on the island. Avoid Tuk-Tuk drivers who appear to be under the influence of intoxicating substances, wines or spirits.
